Report from Press Briefing by Kolkata CG Ma Zhan Wu:

"I wish to make the announcement that the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Kolkata, along with Nalanda University, is holding a seminar on Xuan Zang and China-India Friendly Exchanges at Oberoi Hotel on 7 November 2016. The Chinese pilgrim, popularly known as Hiuen Tsang in India, came to India in the seventh century. He traveled to many parts of the country and did extensive research on Buddhist scriptures and had a wide range of contacts with the local people. His book, "Buddhist Records of the Western World" has helped to discover many Indian relics. His translation and introduction of Buddhist scriptures into China impacts China deeply and even the world. So his name is now written in the textbooks in both China and India.
The seminar will explore the works of Hiuen Tsang and appreciate the philosopher's role in bringing China and India closer, and come up with some ideas on how to strengthen the bilateral relations. By holding this seminar, we also hope to send 2 messages. First, the long history of Sino-Indian friendly relations dwarf the brief time of unpleasantly, and we should bear in mind the big picture instead of focusing only on what happened in a specific year. Second, the two countries have shared interests that far outweigh their differences and they can both benefit greatly by working together.
The speakers for the seminar include experts on Hiuen Tsang from different universities across the world: Professor Wang Bangwei from Peking University, Professor Max Deeg from Cardiff University, Professor Upinder Singh from University of Delhi and Dr Bijoy Chowdhury, Director of K. P. Jayaswal Institute, to name a few.
Teachers and students from Visva-Bharati University, Calcutta University, Jadavpur University and research scholars from Observer Research Foundation, MAKAIS and other institutes will be attending the seminar. The Bishop from Xuan Zang Temple in Kolkata will also be present."
