The Consulate General of the People's Republic of China, in cooperation with Ni Hao! Calcutta and the Indian Chinese Association, successfully held All India’s First Dragon Boat Festival Gala in Rabindra Sarobar, Kolkata, India on 26 June 2016. Consul General Ma Zhanwu, Madam Maria Fernandes, Vice Chairperson of West Bengal Minority Commission, as well as around 6000 people from various circles in India attended the event.
Addressing the inaugural session, Consul General Ma said that the Dragon Boat Festival, celebrated in both China and many of its neighboring countries, is a traditional Chinese festival on which day people express their love to their home country and expectation for a good future. Mr. Ma extended his congratulations on the holding of this very first Dragon Boat Festival Gala in India, which was possible two thousand years after the Chinese and Indians started their exchanges, and over one hundred years after the first groups of Chinese came to settle in Kolkata. He also noted that it was held against the backdrop of rapid development of China-India relations. There are huge potentials for the bilateral exchanges and cooperation, he said, which will improve the life of the two peoples and contribute to the development of both countries and the whole world at large.
